Colorado's Best Kept Secret...nestled high in a valley in the Heart of the San Juan mountains, Silverton is home and hideaway for many residents and vacationers who desire a more simple way of life. Silverton offers a style of living where there is more time for family and community. Children enjoy growing up in a clean, safe community where they can walk or bike around town. Older children have the opportunity to work at summer jobs in the tourist industry. There are always plenty of jobs in the restaurants and gift shops for willing workers.
Families benefit from the strong sense of community found here. From the Fourth of July Parade and the summer music festivals to the Snowscape Winter Carnival - life is good in Silverton. We support a strong, cohesive community where involved citizens of all ages work together to preserve our small-town, rural lifestyle, promote stewardship of the land, and preserve open space and value clean air. We support a community where people have a high regard for their neighbors, a strong sense of place and attachment to the land and have commitment to sustaining a community-oriented way of life.
For many of our residents, the natural beauty and serenity of a small mountain town is what makes Silverton such an ideal place to live. Silverton and the surrounding San Juan Mountains offers a variety of recreational activities including hiking, backpacking, alpine and cross country skiing, sledding, ice skating, fishing, mountain biking, hunting, horseback riding, and photography. The town maintains an outdoor skating rink, ball field, tennis court, and three parks with two playgrounds. Classes are offered in computer education, aerobics, yoga, and Tai Chi. Many special events are also planned throughout the year. See Event Calendar.
Silverton is a civically-active community with many non-profit organizations and clubs encompassing the arts, politics, community and individual betterment for young and old alike. There are six churches in the community.

This K-12 school adopted the Expeditionary Learning Curriculum in 2002-2003, and the kids are having a great time learning both indoors and outdoors in this unique "the world is your classroom" atmosphere. This school has a low teacher pupil ratio, which is an important factor in education. The school has one of the highest percentages of teachers with masters' degrees in the state.
